I listened and noted what the clients, Francesca Chilcote and Connor Hogan, wanted design wise for their cookbook: Dinner! Franny & Connor Write a Cookbook. These clients came to my sophomore graphic design class and each of us were briefed to create a design. The clients wanted a fun, interactive design that matched the energy that their online cooking show/comedy sketch had that the cookbook was based on. The design they liked the best would be chosen as their final outline design for their cookbook.
I was inspired by cookbook designs that seemed to be handmade, or one's with a watercolor design. I liked these handmade looks because it matched the feeling and design the clients were looking for.
The style I went towards was a colorful, illustrative one that matched the fun and creative look the clients were looking for. I picked typefaces that appeared to have a handwritten look, to also match the handmade design look.
The clients wanted an interactive element to their cookbook so readers could have fun and personalize their product without the use of real photos. For this, I decided to make a notes page where readers could write down their thoughts, experiments, and any ideas regarding the recipes within the book.
During this project, I learned how to keep a consistent style throughout a multiple page design and how to listen to what clients specifically ask for and how to bring them a design based on what they have asked for. My results were that the clients liked my design outline and chose it to be a basis for the design of their cookbook.
